Vessels

2022 - Present

An ongoing exploration into carved wooden vessels

 Carved Vessel 1

2022

British Ash

Japanese tea ceremony inspired vessel. Carved from an Ash block with two beautiful contrasting growth rings.

Carved Vessel 2

British Ash

A Tapered Japanese tea ceremony inspired cup in Ash, used to store seaglass found on Shoreham beach.

Though these vessels have a simple geometry, the form can’t be achieved through turning.

The corners make it so they have to be hand carved to create the square profile. I suppose this complexity is why I like them.

Rice Bowl

American Cherry

Chunky and guppy. The stock was joined with the support of some dominoes, when carving I accidentally punched through into them. Rather than patching the mistake I opted to leave them in as it looked interesting and industrial, almost like a loose tongue join from the future.

Coconut Cup 2

Cherry & Ash

A continuation of ‘Coconut Cup’ with a finger pull lid rather than a rocking lid
