Salt & Vinegar Chair

2023 - Aluminium

For Chair Of Virtue - Prototype / In Process

Through an exploration into etching sheet metal with texture and graphics, I realised that fold lines and cut lines could be created with deeper etches, allowing the sheet to be bent into a piece of furniture.

Using the process of electrochemical etching. A sheet of 2mm aluminum is spray painted on all sides, scratched to reveal the metal underneath and left in a solution of water, salt and vinegar with a small electric current running through the sheet and water. This erodes the exposed metal, producing fold lines, cutlines lines and textured graphic embellishments.

I asked @tattytilia to draw a composition of wrapped flowering vines on both sides of the metal, these lines were then scraped away to expose the metal underneath and permanently etched into the work. When the chair is folded up, the drawing becomes fragmented, a new composition takes shape that can’t be predicted.

Only essential cut and fold lines were created to produce this piece. The result is the essence of an armchair in form and function.
