Layer Spoons

For atelier100’s 2nd drop I’ve designed and manufactured a set of serving spoons produced from locally sourced soft green timber such as pine or spruce. This wood would likely be discarded due to its lack of practical applications. I’ve gathered it from nearby arborists, milled, steamed, pressed and trimmed the timber into a pair of serving spoons that in a small way, break the cycle of urban timber waste.

The timber used is ripe with natural defect, such as knots and sap. When it’s pressed in the heated mould block, these defects produce amazing results, spewing sap through the grain and cracking the knots in unexpected ways. Each object is truly unique.

The programme has been an amazing experience so far. Thank you to everyone who’s made it happen and for selecting me to be a part of it.

Through the funding that at100 has given me, it’s allowed me to design and produce something using a scaled industrial process, which in turn has allowed me to sell this set at a more accessible price. If you’ve ever found my work a bit too pricey, but have wanted a piece, now’s your chance!
